Seven Ways to Speak English More Confidently
Confidence is a skill, not a personality trait. Here are seven habits our teachers recommend to anyone who freezes when it is time to speak.

Most people who "can't speak English" actually can — they are just afraid of getting it wrong. Once you loosen that fear, the words you already have start to flow. Try these seven ideas.
1. Aim for clear, not perfect
Native speakers make mistakes constantly and no one minds. Your goal is to be understood, not flawless. Give yourself permission to stumble.
2. Think in English
Narrate small moments in your head — "I'm making tea, then I'll check my email." Thinking in English removes the slow translation step when you finally speak.
3. Learn phrases, not just words
Ready-made chunks like "Could you say that again?" or "What I mean is…" buy you time and sound natural. Collect a handful and use them often.
4. Slow down
Speaking quickly to hide nerves usually backfires. A calm, measured pace gives you time to choose words and helps listeners follow you.
5. Record yourself
Talk for one minute about your day and play it back. It feels strange at first, but you will quickly spot patterns to improve — and hear how much better you sound than you feared.
6. Find low-stakes practice
Order in English, chat with a colleague, join an online group. Small, friendly conversations build the muscle without the pressure.
7. Get regular feedback
A good teacher shortens the whole journey. They notice the one habit holding you back and give you a fix you can use immediately.
If you would like that kind of guidance, our teachers are ready when you are — and your first lesson is free.
